Think you're a driving pro? Think again! A recent analysis reveals a shocking truth: many experienced drivers in Australia might not ace the learner's driving test if they took it today.
EzLicence's study, based on over 18 million practice tests, uncovered some surprising weaknesses.
Speed limits were the biggest headache, with many drivers stumbling over the rules. Considering Australia's diverse speed limit regulations, from school zones to roadworks, it's easy to see why.
But here's where it gets controversial...
What's even more concerning? Vehicle equipment use, such as headlights, indicators, and fog lights, tripped up a significant number of participants, with roughly 20% getting these questions wrong. Night driving and visibility followed closely behind at 18.8%, while intersections and right-of-way questions saw an 18.4% error rate. Parking and stopping questions also presented challenges, with 17.1% of responses incorrect, highlighting difficulties with practical judgment and diagram-based questions.
And this is the part most people miss...
The results also highlighted differences across states. For example, night driving and visibility proved most challenging in New South Wales and Western Australia, while speed limits stumped drivers in South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. Victoria had the highest overall error rate, with 37% of responses failing on vehicle equipment use. Drivers in Tasmania struggled with hazards, and Queenslanders with license conditions and restrictions.
Amanda Butler from EzLicence explained that the Driver Theory Tests go beyond simple memorization. "Driver Theory Tests aren’t just about memorising rules - they’re about applying them in real-world situations. Learners often struggle with giving way, roundabouts, and interpreting diagrams because these questions require both knowledge and practical judgement."
Butler also pointed out that even seasoned drivers can develop bad habits. "Drivers who have plenty of real-world practice, can still forget certain rules or develop habits that don’t fully align with the law. That’s why structured lessons and on-road experience go hand-in-hand - together they help you avoid bad habits and make sure the rules stick."
These findings from EzLicence underscore that knowledge gaps persist even after drivers pass their tests, especially in areas like speed limits, lighting, and right-of-way. It's a wake-up call, reminding us that even confident drivers can benefit from a refresher course on the basics.
